How Cycling Calorie Expenditure is Calculated

When you have a power meter, caloric expenditure is precise:

Energy (kcal) = Average Power (watts) × Duration (seconds) / (4186 × Gross Efficiency)

Typical gross efficiency for trained cyclists: 20–25%. At 23% efficiency:

Energy (kcal) ≈ Average Watts × Duration (hours) × 3.6 / 0.23 ≈ Watts × Hours × 15.65

Example:** 200W average for 2 hours = **200 × 2 × 15.65 ≈ 6,260 kJ ≈ 1,495 kcal

Without a power meter, speed-based estimates are used, but these carry ±15–25% error due to wind, terrain, and drafting variables.

🔥 Why Calorie Counting Alone Misleads Cyclists

The quality of fuel source matters as much as quantity: * Fat provides 9 kcal/g but delivers ATP too slowly for efforts above ~65% VO₂ max. * Carbohydrate provides only 4 kcal/g but fuels high-intensity work at rates 3× faster than fat oxidation. * Training in Zone 2 increases fat oxidation rates, which spares glycogen for hard efforts — this is why "base miles" matter even for criterium racers.
