The Genetic Potential Calculator** applies the **Casey Butt formula — derived from anthropometric measurements of over 300 elite drug-free bodybuilders — to estimate the theoretical maximum lean body mass a natural athlete can achieve at competition condition (approximately 4–6% body fat).

The Casey Butt Formula

Casey Butt's original research (*Your Muscular Potential*, 2010) identified that bone structure — specifically wrist and ankle circumference — is the primary determinant of natural muscle-building ceiling. Larger skeletal frame = more surface area for muscle attachment = higher absolute lean mass potential.

The core relationships:

  • Wrist circumference — proxy for upper body bone density and shoulder girdle breadth
  • Ankle circumference — proxy for lower body skeletal robustness and hip width
  • Height — scales overall frame size

FFMI: The Natural Ceiling

The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) normalises lean mass for height, allowing comparison across body sizes:

Maximum Lean Mass vs Competition Weight

The calculator outputs maximum lean body mass at near-stage condition (~4–6% BF). To estimate total competition weight:

  • At 5% BF: Total = LBM ÷ 0.95
  • At 10% BF (athletic): Total = LBM ÷ 0.90
  • At 15% BF (general fitness): Total = LBM ÷ 0.85
Most natural athletes spend their training career at 10–15% BF, meaning their walking weight exceeds their maximum lean mass — which is normal and expected.

Physique Measurement Predictions

The calculator also outputs predicted peak measurements (arms, chest, thighs, calves) based on Casey Butt's proportionality ratios from his bodybuilding dataset. These represent peak stage measurements at maximum lean mass, not current measurements.
