The conjugate periodisation system, formalised by Louie Simmons at Westside Barbell, runs two training stimuli simultaneously within every training week: maximum effort work and dynamic effort work. Rather than separating strength and speed into distinct phases, conjugate training develops both concurrently — exploiting the complementary structure of the force-velocity curve.

The force-velocity curve describes the inverse relationship between the force a muscle produces and the velocity at which it contracts. At one extreme: maximum force at near-zero velocity, such as a 1RM deadlift. At the other: maximum velocity at near-zero external resistance, as in a sprint start. Standard linear or block programmes move along this curve one zone at a time. Conjugate trains both ends of the curve within the same week, maintaining adaptation in both qualities simultaneously.

The maximum effort (ME) method involves working up to a 1–3RM on a variation of the main competition lift — typically performed every 72–96 hours for each movement pattern. Westside rotates exercise selection every 1–3 weeks: box squat, safety bar squat, floor press, board press, deficit deadlift. This prevents accommodation — the reduction in training stimulus as the nervous system adapts to a specific movement pattern. Drawing on Zatsiorsky's work on specificity and variation, Simmons recognised that the nervous system adapts to the exact exercise executed, not just the general movement. Continuous rotation prevents premature neural plateau.

The dynamic effort (DE) method uses submaximal loads — 50–60% of 1RM — performed for sets of 2–3 reps with maximum intentional bar speed. The goal is not load; it is rate of force development in the acceleration phase of the lift. Accommodating resistance — elastic bands or chains — is added to address the ascending strength curve: as the lifter approaches full extension where mechanical advantage is greatest, band tension adds load, ensuring maximal motor unit recruitment across the entire range of motion.

Prilepin's table — derived from Soviet Olympic weightlifting research — provides the optimal volume structure: for loads at 55–65% of 1RM (the dynamic effort zone), 24–30 total reps per session at a maximum of 3 reps per set is the effective range for developing neural drive without accumulating fatigue that would impair the next ME session. This is not endurance training with a barbell. Each repetition requires maximum velocity intent from the moment of initiation.

The practical outcome of conjugate training: simultaneous improvements in maximum strength, starting strength, and explosive power output across the force-velocity curve. This is why the system is applied across powerlifting, American football linemen, throws athletes, and combat sports — any context where force production must be high across a wide range of contraction velocities.
